STEP METHOD
Holistic Virtual learning
STEP Learning™ Model is a holistic design-thinking framework that engages students through a combination of contextualized knowledge mastery, work skill exercises and challenge-based creativity projects. Opportunities for students to express themselves and to win challenges foster a learning environment that underscores relevancy and motivations to galvanize student attention.
Students are equipped with foundational content like STEM and core technology skills through knowledge mastery lessons that are relevant to the problem theme. These lessons can be scheduled as live classes (synchronous learning) or provided as a self-directed library resource (asynchronous learning). Within lesson content, links to relevant project journaling themes are provided to foster brainstorming and reflection activities that evolve student projects.
As part of lessons, students participate in hands-on exercises to develop skills that are related to foundational knowledge presented in each lesson. Quiz testing is provided to assess standards-based knowledge mastery and skill proficiency. At the conclusion of each lesson, students are directed to relevant project journaling themes for brainstorm and reflection activities to evolve their projects.
Student teams, including mentors, hone collaborative projects through asynchronous self-directed brainstorming and design including the development of presentation exhibits (prototypes, demos, slide decks, etc.) in preparation for the Pitch phase.
The final step is for student teams to present in a showcase such as a hackathon, business competition, market day, science fair or other challenge or contest formats. Expert judges assess performance and provide feedback. After showcases, teams may continue to evolve their project journals and exhibits for use in personal portfolios.
assessments & Badging
Traditional Academic Standards: SEE and TRY phases measure via quiz that trigger badge awards that aggregate to student portfolios. Typical standards employed include HCPS III, CCSS, NGSS, HCSSS, CSTA K-12 Computer Science Standards and General Learner Outcomes (GLOs).
21st Century Soft Skills: Evolve & Pitch phases are assessed through 4Cs (Creativity, Critical-thinking, Collaboration, Communication), VIBE® Creative Skill Aspirations, EIS Survey (Entrepreneurship & Innovation Skills), SEL Survey (Social Emotional Learning) and Awards, Prizes & Feedback via showcase judging.
Hybrid in-class & remote
This system is showcased in the BizzyB.com LMS and mirrored in print workbook curriculum systems. All systems can be implemented in-class, remotely and/or blended in- and out-class.
Measuring 12 Creative Skills
VIBE® Creative Aspirations Assessment measures the 12 skills of the creative cycle.
Creative Gap Analysis
Subjects self-assess by taking a survey that measures both current levels of creative skills and desired levels of creative skills. The system calculates a gap analysis to show creative skill aspirations and relevant learning opportunities.
Leadership & Team-Building
Users are assigned one of 4 general archetypes: Visionary, Inventor, Builder or Explorer. Archetypes are indicative of leadership types and profiles can be used to build holistic teams.
21st Century Soft Skills
Creativity is the apex soft skill. Applied in collaborative contexts, it drives all Soft Skills including creativity, innovation, critical-thinking, design-thinking, collaboration and communication.
